- OpenAI does not accept UnionPay. ChatGPT billing runs on Visa / Mastercard / American Express, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay in supported apps and regions, and a few local methods (UPI in India, Pix in Brazil). UnionPay is not among them.

The short answer
No — not directly. Enter a UnionPay card at ChatGPT checkout and it will almost always be rejected on submit, typically with *"Your card was declined"* or *"card not supported"*. This is not a mistake on your side: OpenAI checkout simply has no UnionPay acceptance channel enabled.
OpenAI currently accepts credit and debit cards on the Visa, Mastercard and American Express networks, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay in supported apps and regions, and selected local methods in a few countries (UPI in India, GoPay in Indonesia, Pix in Brazil, Kakao Pay / Naver Pay in Korea). A mainland-issued UnionPay card fits none of these.
Why it fails: a UnionPay logo does not mean acceptance
People are often misled by "my card works overseas". Two separate things have to be true:

OpenAI subscription charges are processed by Stripe, which layers BIN screening, 3DS checks and region rules on top of the network logo. That is why the same card can succeed elsewhere and be declined here.
Why the UnionPay-for-Apple route does not help mainland users
This is the most commonly misreported path of 2026, so it is worth being precise.
On 20 November 2025, UnionPay International announced that UnionPay Online Payments became available for Apple Services — App Store, Apple Music, Apple TV, iCloud and more. It sounds like you could now buy a ChatGPT subscription through the App Store with UnionPay.
Two qualifiers in that announcement decide who it actually helps:
- ✓Only 15 markets: Australia, Cambodia, Georgia, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Macao SAR, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and the UAE. Mainland China is not on the list.
- ✓Locally issued cards only — the card must be issued in one of those regions and used with an Apple ID for that region. Cards issued by mainland Chinese banks do not qualify.
There is a second condition on top: even where the payment side works, the ChatGPT app must be available in that region's App Store and offer in-app subscriptions. Do not evaluate only the payment half.

Stripe does support UnionPay acceptance. The UnionPay International partnership with Stripe covers merchants in 30+ markets including the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, Singapore, the EU and Hong Kong. As a Stripe merchant, OpenAI has the technical means to turn UnionPay on.

Can I subscribe to ChatGPT Plus with a UnionPay card?

What about my dual-branded UnionPay + Visa card?
